Women in tech suffer because of American myth of meritocracy

Women in tech suffer because of American myth of meritocracyWomen in tech suffer because of American myth of meritocracyThe American dream is built on the notion that the U.S. is a meritocracy. Americans believe success in life and business can be earned by anyone willing to put in the hard work necessary to achieve it, or so they say. Thus, Americans commonly believe that those who are successful deserve to be so and those who arent are equally deserving of their fate despite growing evidence that widening inequalities in income, wealth, labor and gender play a major role in who makes it and who doesnt. And this very fact that Americans believe their society is a meritocracy is the biggest threat to equality, particularly when it comes to gender, as research by myself and others shows. The meaning of meritocracyGender inequality is pervasive in American society.Women in the U.S. continue to experience gender bias, sexual harassment and little progress in relation to equitable wages. Top positions in government and the business sector remain stubbornly male.At the same time, 75% of Americans say they believe in meritocracy. This belief persists despite evidence that we tend to use it to explain actions that preserve the status quo of gender discrimination rather than reverse it.This myth is so powerful, it influences our behaviors.Work harderEntrepreneurship is an area where the myths and realities of the American meritocracy come to a head.In the U.S., women own 39% of all privately owned businesses but receive only around 4 percent of venture capital funding. Put another way, male-led ventures receive 96 percent of all funding.Yet the meritocracy myth, which my research shows has a stronghold in the world of entrepreneurship, means that women are constantly told that all they have to do to get more of that $22 billion or so in venture capital funding is make better pitches or be more assertive. The assumption is that women arent trying hard enough or doing the right things to get ahead, not that the way venture capitalists offer funding is itself unfair.Pipeline problemAnother explanation for the lack of funding for women is pinned on the pipeline problem. That is, women just arent interested in the fields that fasson the backbone of the industry science, technology, engineering and math. Thus, if more women entered STEM fields, there would be more women entrepreneurs, and more money would flow to them. Pipeline explanations assume that there are no obstacles preventing women from becoming entrepreneurs in technology.Yet, we know the opposite is true. According to technology historian Marie Hicks and her book Programmed Inequality, women in tech were pushed out by men.Research Ive conducted with management professor Susan Clark Muntean on entrepreneur support organizations, such as accelerators, shows that they often engage in outreach and recruitment tactics that benefit men rather than women. This is further supported by survey data fr om Techstars, one of the best-known and respected tech accelerators in the world. About 4 in 5 companies that have gone through their programs are white and almost 9 in 10 are male.Gender-neutral mythAnd yet these tech accelerators are guided by an implicit understanding that gender-neutral outreach and recruitment practices rather than targeted ones will bring in the best people. This notion is often expressed as ur doors are open to everyone to indicate that they do not discriminate.Ironically, many organizations in the tech sector adopt this idea because they believe it is gender-neutral and, thus, unbiased.Yet claiming to be gender-neutral prevents organizations from recognizing that their practices are actually biased. Most outreach and recruitment takes place through word-of-mouth, alumni referrals and personal networks of accelerator leadership, which are predominantly composed of males. These approaches often bring in more of the same white male entrepreneurs rather than dive rse professionals. As a result, women do not have equal access to resources in entrepreneurial ecosystems. And all this is despite the fact that data on returns show venture-backed tech startups with women at the helm outperform those led by men.Being gender-awareThe first step to solving this problem is for tech startups, investors and accelerators to realize that what they call meritocracy is, in fact, itself gender-biased and results in mostly white men gaining access to resources and funding. By continuing to believe in meritocracy and maintaining practices associated with it, gender equality will remain a distant goal. The next step is to move away from gender-neutral approaches and instead adopt gender-aware, proactive measures to change unfair practices. This includes rahmen concrete goals to achieve gender balance, examining the gender composition of boards, committees and other influential groups in the organization, and assessing the tools and channels used for outreach, rec ruitment and support of entrepreneurs. The return on investment in gender equality is clear Supporting and investing in businesses started by half the worlds population will create thriving societies and sustainable economies. And it starts with male allies who want to be part of the solution and recognize that meritocracy, as society currently defines it, isnt the way to go.Banu Ozkazanc-Pan is aVisiting Associate Professor of Engineering, Brown UniversityThis articlewas originally published on The Conversation.

How to Write a Hybrid Resume to Handle Resume Gaps

How to Write a Hybrid Resume to Handle Resume GapsHow to Write a Hybrid Resume to Handle Resume Gaps78hide the gaps. This is the also wrong approach.A functional resume is elend a way in which to hide gaps in work experience. Instead, use a hybrid chrono-functional resume to highlight your qualifications for a role prior to explaining to the reader that you have gaps in your work experience. If you were to submit an entirely skills-based resume for a job without listing any employment dates, you most likely wouldnt receive a callback from the employer because it is evident you are hiding something. Therefore, writing an effective hybrid resume is actually quite difficult- unless of course, you have a great how-to at your fingertips (like this one) to walk you through it.Heres how to write a functional resume to handle resume gaps.1. Start with a Headline or Summary of QualificationsIntroduce yourself and your experience in a nutshellthe things that make you the best choice for this par ticular job. Tell the hiring manager things like how many years of experience you offer, your industry expertise, your academic background, and even previous job titles youve held.2. Outline Your Core Strengths Review the job posting for important keywords that align with your technical proficiency and overall work ethic, and add these terms into your core strengths section to strengthen your resume.3. Create a Selected Achievements Section If this were a chronological resume, this is where you would jump into your work experience. However, this is a hybrid resume, so instead we jump into your most relevant achievements. Job seekers with recent gaps in their experience often have great achievements to put on their resume, but they get lost listed under roles that were over five years ago.By creating a selected achievements section, you can highlight those achievements right at the top of your resume to show the hiring manager that you are qualified for the role. You can also expand t he selected achievements section to break up your achievements based on skill sets such as Project Management, Sales Marketing, or Customer Service. You should only focus on skills that are directly related to the role you are targeting, and you should have no more than five bullet points under each skill. It is also important to attribute these skills to a role in your career history, volunteer experience, or even your academics.4. Disclose Your Timeline ChronologicallyAs mentioned earlier, a hybrid chrono-functional resume is not meant to hide your gaps. It is simply meant to draw attention to your qualifications to intrigue the hiring manager, prior to outlining your gaps. After outlining your achievements, you need to create an experience section. Here you will list your employment experience chronologically. If there are gaps spanning more than one year, you can choose to include a line explaining the gap such as Maternity Leave or Leave of Absence to Attend to Family. However, including an explanation for a gap is not necessary.Follow up your experience with an education section, unless your education is more recent and/or relevant than your work experience. In that case, you should begin your experience section with your academic information and follow it with your employment history.Honesty is the key- as it is with any resume. If you are turning to a functional format to hide your gaps, the hiring manager will see right through it. However, if you use a hybrid format to effectively handle your timeline gaps while still showcasing your qualifications, the hiring manager will see your value.Readers, have you ever tried to write a hybrid resume? How to Relax Before Starting a New Job - The Muse

How to Relax Before Starting a New Job - The Muse How to Relax Before Starting a New Job Last year at this time I was freelancing while trying (somewhat unsuccessfully) to find a steady stream of work. While I didn’t have to go into an office every day, it was in no way a relaxing break from the grind. So, when I received a full-time job offer, I purposely set aside some time to celebrate by catching up on some TV and playing a few video games I had neglected. And those are perfectly acceptable things to do, especially if you are intentional about how you use that time. The only problem for me was that I definitely did not have a plan other than that. And before I knew it, I was mourning the fact that I didn’t use my free time more wisely. So, while you should feel free to relax a bit before you start a new job, you should also make sure to avoid these common traps: 1. You’ll Want to Sleep as Long as You Want Hey, I’m a huge fan of getting a little extra sleep when you have the time to do so. But I also know how hard it is to go from 12-hour nights to seven-hours. I did this at least once before I started a new job, and I would never wish the restlessness I felt the night before I was scheduled to start on my worst enemy. If you want to catch up on a couple hours of sleep while you have a more relaxed schedule, be my guest. But just keep in mind how difficult it might be to transition suddenly into work mode when the time comes to do so. So yes, set your alarm a little bit later, but don’t forget to set it completely. But Maybe You Should Do Some of The Fun Things You Never Thought You’d Do During the Week OK, I bet some of you out there are thinking, “But what if “fun” for me is sleeping for 15 hours, then eating dinner, then napping, then sleeping some more?” And aside from not understanding that at all, I’d argue that isn’t the best way to maximize the time you have off before you start your new gig. I’d also argue there are a few things you’ve always meant to do, but have been blaming your job for the fact that you haven’t had the time to check them off your list. Maybe that’s a trip to the beach, or a few hours at a typically crowded museum, or nabbing reservations at a trendy restaurant, or maybe it’s simply opening a book you’ve wanted to read for the last five years. Whatever that thing is for you, go ahead and choose a few to enjoy. 2. You’ll Want to Catch Up With Everyone You’ve Fallen Out of Touch With This is an admirable thought, but if you’re anything like me, the list of people you don’t talk to regularly is fairly long. And while it’s not a terrible thought to get up to speed on the lives of some of your friends, making it a goal to catch up with everyone sounds terribly exhausting. You’ll find yourself running from a coffee date, to a lunch meeting, to another coffee date, to a dinner, only to quickly realize that you don’t actually have that much time off. And once that happens, it’s inevitable that you’ll only feel disappointed in the fact that you didn’t get around to everyone. So, while this is a nice sentiment, don’t put any added pressure on yourself to get around to every single person in your network. But Maybe You Should Thank the People Who Helped You Out Again, you won’t be able to get around to every single person who lent you a helping hand. But, I bet you can think of a handful of people who played an instrumental role in landing the job you’re about to start. Maybe it’s an old boss, or a colleague, or someone in your family. Whoever those people are, you’re probably feeling some amount of gratitude toward those folks (or, you should be at least). And if that’s the case, it’s always a good idea to think of ways to show them how grateful you are. It might only require a short email, but whatever you decide, the best part about this is that it won’t take you a whole lot of time- leaving you plenty of room on your calendar to relax (or do whatever it is you want to do) while you have the time before your first day of work. 3. You’ll Want to Learn Everything About Your New Company While I celebrated getting my last job by playing video games for a week, there have been times when I resolved to be as well-versed about my new company as possible on my first day. I’d sit in front of my laptop and digest as many articles as I could find about the organization’s history, the executive team, and anything else I could get my hands on. And while I’m not saying that’s necessarily a bad thing, a funny thing happened the last time I did this: I was able to rattle off more about the company’s background than a lot of its most tenured employees could ever imagine. One of my colleagues actually replied in jest by saying, “Yeah, but you still know how to do this job, right?” The moral of this story? Do your research, but don’t put a ton of pressure on yourself to know every single detail about how your company got to where it is today. There will be plenty of time to learn. But You Might Want to Make Sure You’re Ready to Tackle the Actual Job When my teammate made fun of me for knowing the company’s entire history, he accidentally brought up a good point. I was fairly new to the industry I was entering, and although I had enough of the practical skills to do the job well, there were plenty of other elements I wasn’t as familiar with. Rather than finding out what the CEO likes for lunch on Fridays, it would’ve been a much better use of my time to learn some of the basic concepts of the field. Again, it’s not up to you to master everything before you step in the door on your first day, but if you are into doing a lot of research before you start a new gig, try brushing up on some of the things that’ll help you knock it out of the park. When you have time to yourself before you start a new job, you’ll have a lot of options. And that’s a good thing. The best news is that nothing you choose to do is technically wrong. But, there are definitely a few ideas that will be less relaxing, less productive, or some combination of both than others. And if you do nothing else, take some time to pat yourself on the back. After all, there’s an awesome job waiting for you- and you worked really, really hard to get it. Photo of relaxed person courtesy of Ales-A/Getty Images.

Recording Cover Songs on a Demo

Recording Cover Songs on a Demo Recording Cover Songs on a Demo The decision of whether to use a cover song on your demo depends in part on what your goal for the demo is: to demonstrate your vocal skills as a working singer or your playing abilities or to present yourself as an artist. What's Your Goal for the Demo? If the aim is to show off your vocal abilities or playing abilities- say to audition for a role as a session musician or backup singer- then a cover song is perfectly acceptable. A wide variety of styles in your covers will show your flexibility. Further, if there is a cover song that is particularly associated with you or your group, such as one your fans always shout for at your shows, then you have a better argument for including a cover on your demo. If youre looking to present yourself as an original artist, then your demo should reflect your style- preferably through original songs of your own. Your music demo is supposed to be just that- a demonstration of your music. Demos are used for attracting attention from record labels, promoters, managers, agents, and other industry types, and what all of these people want from a demo is a clear understanding of what kind of music you make, what unique ideas you have, and whether or not you have a sound that it is identifiable as your own. Your demo should focus on what makes you unique as an artist, so a consistent style will serve you well; a broad range of material and cover songs are not your best option for a demo. Using a cover song shortchanges you because it stops you from showing off all of your abilities. Remember that your time to capture someones attention with a demo is very short. If there was ever a time to come with your A-game, its this. You Can Still Use a Cover At the end of the day, including a cover song on your demo is not an absolute no-no. If youre planning to include a cover on your album, or as previously stated, there is already a cover song associated with you, then you can get away with it. As a rule, however, limit yourself to one, and dont ever just ape the original version. Youll enter karaoke territory, and that will be the kiss of death for your demo. Tips on Recording Your Demo As a musician, your demo is your calling card. It can help you expand your audience, and its your ticket to getting noticed by record labels, so its important to get it right. Contrary to popular belief, demo recording doesnt have to be elaborate or expensive. If your songs are great, listeners will hear it, no matter how much cash you spent on the recording. Check out the article on how to record a music demo that covers important topics such as: Picking your recording venue.Choosing your recording method.Setting up to record.Recording and mixing your demo.Mastering your recording. How to Send Out a Music Demo If you already have your demo recorded, you can find tips on getting your demo out there and into the hands of the people who can help you take it to the next level.

10 signs youre burning out (and how to stop it)

10 signs you're burning out (and how to stop it) 10 signs you're burning out (and how to stop it) Even the best jobs can lead to burnout. The harder you work and the more motivated you are to succeed, the easier it is to get in over your head.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! The prevalence of burnout is increasing as technology further blurs the line between work and home. Recent research from the American Psychological Association and the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago reported the following: 48% of Americans experienced increased stress over the past 5 years 31% of employed adults have difficulty managing their work and family responsibilities 53% say work leaves them “overtired and overwhelmed.” A Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) poll found that “burnout from my current job” was one of the top reasons that people quit.Burnout can get the better of you, even when you have great passion for your work. Arianna Huffington experienced this first hand when she almost lost an eye from burnout. She was so tired at work that she passed out, hitting her face on her desk. She broke her cheekbone and had to get four stitches  on  her eye.“I wish I could go back and tell myself that not only is there no trade-off between living a well-rounded life and high performance, performance is actually improved when our lives include time for renewal, wisdom, wonder, and giving. That would have saved me a lot of unnecessary stress, burnout, and exhaustion.”    Ã¢€"Arianna HuffingtonBurnout often results from a misalignment of input and output; you get burnt out when you feel like you’re putting more into your work than you’re getting out of it. Sometimes this happens when a job isn’t rewarding, but more often than not it’s because you aren’t taking care of yourself. Before you can treat and even prevent burnout, you need to recognize the warning signs so that you’ll know when it’s time to take action. Here they are, in no particular order.Health problemsBurnout has a massive, negative impact upon your physical and mental health. Whether you’re experiencing back pain, depression, heart disease, obesity, or you’re just getting sick a lot, you need to consider the role your work is playing in this. You’ll know when burnout is affecting your health, and you’ll just have to decide whether your approach to work is worth the consequences.Cognitive difficultiesResearch shows that stress hammers the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for executive function. Executive function impacts your memory, decision-making abilities, emotional control, and focus. When you notice that you’re making silly mistakes, forgetting important t hings, having outbursts of emotion, or making poor decisions, you’re likely burning out.Difficulty with work and personal relationshipsStress bleeds over into everything you do, particularly how you interact with people. Even when you feel that you’re keeping your stress under control at work, it can rear its ugly head at home. Often it’s your relationships that suffer. Stress makes many people more likely to snap at others, lose their cool, and get involved in silly, unnecessary conflicts. Others are more inclined to withdraw and avoid people they care about.Taking your work home with youYou know that sickening feeling when you’re lying in bed thinking about all the work that you didn’t get done and hoping that you didn’t miss something important? When you can’t stop thinking about work when you’re at home, it’s a strong sign that you’re burning out.FatigueBurnout often leads to exhaustion because of the toll stress takes on your mind and body. The hallmarks of burnout fatigue are waking up with no energy after a good night’s sleep, drinking large amounts of caffeine to get you through the day, or having trouble staying awake at work.NegativityBurnout can turn you very negative, even when you’re usually a positive person. If you find yourself focusing on the downside of situations, judging others and feeling cynical, it’s clear that negativity has taken hold and it’s time for you to do something about it.Decreased satisfactionBurnout almost always leads to a nagging sense of dissatisfaction. Projects and people that used to get you excited no longer do so. This dip in satisfaction makes work very difficult because no matter what you’re putting into your job, you don’t feel like you’re getting much out of it.Losing your motivationWe begin jobs in a honeymoon phase, seeing everything through rose-colored glassesWhen you’re in this phase, motivation comes naturally. In a burnout state, you struggle to find the motivation to ge t the job done. You may complete tasks, and even complete them well, but the motivation that used to drive you is gone. Instead of doing work for the sake of the work itself, your motivation stems from fear- of missing deadlines, letting people down, or getting fired.Performance issuesPeople who burn out are often high achievers, so when their performance begins to slip, others don’t always notice. It’s crucial to monitor your slippage. How were you performing a month ago? Six months ago? A year ago? If you see a dip in your performance, it’s time to determine if burnout is behind it.Poor self-careLife is a constant struggle against the things that feel good momentarily but aren’t good for you. When you experience burnout, your self-control wanes and you find yourself succumbing to temptations more easily. This is largely due to the way that stress compromises your decision-making and self-control and also partially due to lower levels of confidence and motivation.Fighting B urnoutIf you recognize many of these symptoms in yourself, don’t worry. Fighting burnout is a simple matter of self-care. You need good ways to separate yourself from your work so that you can recharge and find balance. The following will help you to accomplish this.DisconnectDisconnecting is the most important burnout strategy on this list, because if you can’t find time to remove yourself electronically from your work, then you’ve never really left work. Making yourself available to your work 24/7 exposes you to a constant barrage of stressors that prevent you from refocusing and recharging. If taking the entire evening or weekend off from handling work e-mails and calls isn’t realistic, try designating specific times to check in on emails and respond to voicemails. For example, on weekday evenings, you may check emails after dinner, and on the weekend you may check your messages on Saturday afternoon while your kids are playing sports. Scheduling such short blocks of time alleviates stress without sacrificing your availability.Pay attention to your body signalsIt’s easy to think that a headache is the result of dehydration, that a stomachache is the result of something you ate, and that an aching neck is from sleeping on it wrong, but that’s not always the case. Oftentimes, aches and pains are an accumulation of stress and anxiety. Burnout manifests in your body, so learn to pay attention to your body’s signals so that you can nip burnout in the bud. Your body is always talking, but you have to listen.Schedule relaxationIt’s just as important to plan out your relaxation time as it is to plan out when you work. Even scheduling something as simple as “read for 30 minutes” benefits you greatly. Scheduling relaxing activities makes certain they happen as well as gives you something to look forward to.Stay away from sleeping pillsWhen I say sleeping pills, I mean anything you take that sedates you so that you can sleep. Whether it’s alcohol , Nyquil, Benadryl, Valium, Ambien, or what have you, these substances greatly disrupt your brain’s natural sleep process. Have you ever noticed that sedatives can give you some really strange dreams? As you sleep and your brain removes harmful toxins, it cycles through an elaborate series of stages, at times shuffling through the day’s memories and storing or discarding them (which causes dreams). Sedation interferes with these cycles, altering the brain’s natural process. Anything that interferes with the brain’s natural sleep process has dire consequences for the quality of your sleep, and you need adequate, quality sleep to avoid burnout.Get organizedMuch of the stress we experience on a daily basis doesn’t stem from having too much work; it stems from being too disorganized to handle the work effectively. When you take the time to get organized, the load feels much more manageable.Take regular breaks during the workday.  Physiologically, we work best in spurts of an h our to an hour and a half, followed by 15-minute breaks. If you wait until you feel tired to take a break, it’s too late- you’ve already missed the window of peak productivity and fatigued yourself unnecessarily in the process. Keeping to a schedule ensures that you work when you’re the most productive and that you rest during times that would otherwise be unproductive.Lean on your support systemIt’s tempting to withdraw from other people when you’re feeling stressed, but they can be powerful allies in the war against burnout. Sympathetic family and friends are capable of helping you. Spending time with people who care about you helps you to remove yourself from the stresses of work and reminds you to live a little and have fun.Bringing It All TogetherIf these strategies don’t work for you, then the problem might be your job. The wrong job can cause burnout in and of itself. In that case you’ll have to decide what’s more important: your work or your health. How do you beat burnout? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.This article first appeared on Linkedin.

How to prioritize when your to-do list wants to kill you

How to prioritize when your to-do list wants to kill you How to prioritize when your to-do list wants to kill you You sit down at your computer, grab your favorite notepad, and begin jotting down a to-do list for the day: Answer that email; check on the progress of an existing project; reach out to a new connection; finish reviewing (and submit!) a huge assignment. And before you know it, you’re out of paper - but you know there’s still so much more to do. And now, rather than looking at your to-do list as something to kick-start productivity, keep you organized, and actually help you, you feel like it’s only out to get you. We’ve all been there! Staring down at that seemingly never-ending list isn’t fun - particularly when there’s so much to accomplish you can’t even determine how and where to get started. But don’t spiral into a panic just yet! Here are six tips to help you prioritize your to-do list, even when your workload seems completely unmanageable.1. Write down only what needs to get doneThis point seems painfully obvious. But, if you’re anything like me, your to-do li st always (somehow) becomes a dumping ground. It’s where you note all of those random tidbits that pop into your head - whether it’s a new book to read or an idea for a long-term project you want to get started on soon. Before you know it, the list that was supposed to keep you focused for one day is now a document detailing reminders for the next few months. So now it’s just making you feel more stressed and swamped - rather than helping you see a quick snapshot of the things you should be chipping away at today. You can still go ahead and jot down all of those little things that need to find their way out of your brain and onto paper. But, after you’ve done that, start a separate to-do list for just the next 24-hours. It’ll help you feel less overwhelmed and much more clear-headed.2. Recognize the difference between urgent and importantAnd now focus: While it may not always feel like it, there’s a big difference between urgent and important. So when trying to dig your way out of a ridiculously large pile of tasks, focus solely on the urgent ones- even if that means leaving important things dangling on your list for the next day.Armed with an already pared down to-do list (see step 1) you have a good start on recognizing what you need to accomplish. But now I challenge you to take a fine-tooth comb to that existing list. For each action item, ask yourself, “Does this absolutely need to be done by tomorrow morning?”This will help you separate the things that absolutely need to get done from the things you really want to get done. When you’re already pressed for time and resources, focus on just the barebones. Things that don’t have a pressing deadline should be removed immediately. (Add them to the overflow list, not your today to-do list.)3. Batch similar tasks togetherProject hopping - we’re all guilty of it. You answer an email, make a little progress on a project, reply to another email, and then go back to said project. Yes, you’r e working hard - but, are you really working smart? Constantly switching gears can often be a distraction, making it difficult for you to maintain focus and cross entire tasks off your to-do list. This is where the concept of “batching” comes in. Numerous productivity experts have asserted that grouping similar tasks together into batches can significantly increased productivity. So, address all of those lingering emails, and then move on to your bigger project. You’ll notice an uptick in both productivity and focus.4. Utilize the Pomodoro TechniqueHave you heard of the Pomodoro Technique? If you easily fall into the trap of distraction, this can really help you stay in the zone. Basically, it splits your workday into chunks. You work for 25 minutes, and then take a five-minute break. And that full cycle is called the Pomodoro Technique.Taking breaks can seem counterintuitive when your schedule is already packed. However, this time management system works by instilling a sense of urgency. You’re motivated to get as much work done as possible in those 25 minutes. It’s a great trick to be more intentional with your time!5. Estimate your timeWe all start our workdays with the best intentions. And, yes, being overly ambitious with your to-do list might sound like a good idea in theory. But, it usually means you end the day feeling frustrated. It’s for this very reason that you should assign time estimates. Next to each task, note how much time you think that particular item will take. Then, do some simple math and add everything up, including at least an hour of buffer time for unexpected roadblocks. If those estimates add up to a ridiculous number then you need to seriously prioritize your items- or work an extra long day to accomplish it all. This exercise helps you be realistic with what you aim to complete. Plus, it allows you to get a proactive handle on whether or not you’re going to miss a deadline. This means you can get ahead of the problem an d loop the necessary people in on the probable delay, rather than begging for forgiveness when you’ve missed the mark.6. Just get startedThe above tips can undoubtedly be helpful when trying to tackle an overwhelming workload. But, sometimes the best thing is to just take a deep breath and get started.Of course, you want to attack your to-do list in a way that’s as methodical and strategic as possible - you don’t want to waste time unnecessarily by hopping around from project to project. However, you also want to avoid falling into the opposite trap: If you spend so much time figuring out how to get started on your to-do list, you end up wasting time - time you could’ve used to cross off a few tasks. So, ultimately, use your best judgment when it comes to managing responsibilities and assignments. After all, nobody knows your work style (or your to-do list, for that matter!) as well as you do.This article was originally published on The Everygirl.
